Podcast Premiere!

We’re thrilled to launch our brand-new podcast, The Educators MathCast, where passionate conversations meet powerful ideas in K–12 mathematics education. Hosted by Mike Flynn and Zak Champagne, each month you’ll get two opportunities to spark your thinking:

  • On the first of the month, Mike and Zak tackle a topic in mathematics education in a quick, 15-minute conversation that gets right to the heart of the issue.
  • On the fifteenth, you’ll hear a “Voices from the Field” episode featuring rich conversations with teachers, coaches, and researchers from across the country.

Tune in to explore:

  • Fresh perspectives on emerging trends in math education
  • Real stories from real educators that highlight the challenges and joys of teaching
  • Practical strategies you can bring into your own classroom right away

Debate Math Minis Here!

What happens when you take the energy of a math debate and condense it into bite-sized classroom moments? You get Debate Math Minis

Mike and Zak teamed up with Chris and Rob at Debate Math and created a series of seven short, powerful debates designed to spark discussion, reasoning, and let’s be honest…some healthy disagreements.

These debates are serious, mathy, and quirky all at once.

The first Mini drops Thursday August 14th. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts or you can watch at the Debate Math YouTube Channel. And we’ve got a new dropping each week.

Let’s get debating!

New Mini Course

Available to Members of Friends of Flynn Ed Wednesday, May 7

This self-paced mini workshop takes you on an engaging journey into the practice (or process standard) of Modeling with Mathematics, offering a clear and practical understanding of what modeling really is, what it looks like in classrooms, and how to make it a central part of students’ problem-solving experiences.

Through real-world contexts, everyday environments, and easy-to-implement routines, you will learn how to help students develop a mathematical lens that sharpens their ability to mathematize contextualized situations, create and revise mathematical models, and use approximation to solve complex problems.

Target Audience

  • K-5 teachers, math coaches, and math specialists
  • This work applies to 6-8 as well, but the examples are mostly K-5

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Clearly define and describe what it means to model with mathematics.
  • Identify and address common misinterpretations of mathematical modeling.
  • Facilitate mathematical modeling opportunities using students’ environments.
  • Implement daily routines that develop students’ mathematical lenses.
  • Select, adapt, or design tasks that emphasize modeling with mathematics and enhance students’ problem-solving skills.
  • Build students’ capacity to create, revise, and communicate their mathematical models using authentic contexts.
  • Create a classroom culture where ambiguity and approximation are embraced as part of the problem-solving process.

Let’s Play!

Math Play Date

One of our favorite things at Flynn Education is doing math together. We love to take a really good math task and we dive in as a team and squeeze all the math we can out of it. We call them math play dates, and now we want to offer those to everyone. Let’s all come together and do some math. We’re going to have three free math playdates this month, one on April 14th, one on April 17th, and one on April 30th. You can join one or you can join all three. We’re going to do different math each time. We can’t wait to join you there.

Inter-Synchronous Learning

We’re excited to introduce our newest professional learning experience:

Unleashing the Power of Our Number System

Join us for a deep dive into our base-ten number system and learn how to leverage it to strengthen students’ computational fluency in grades K-8. Engage in hands-on math tasks designed to enhance your own content knowledge while uncovering effective instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of your students.
