Session 1 Wrap-Up

Key Mathematical Ideas

Strategies for multidigit computation rely on the base-ten structure of the number system and the properties of the operations.

Each visual or physical representation of numbers or operations highlights some aspects of the mathematics and obscures others.

The same amount can be expressed in different ways using powers of ten; for example, 100 is 1 hundred or 10 tens or 9 tens + 10 ones; 1,000 is 1 thousand or 9 hundreds + 9 tens +10 ones.

Elaborations

The videos below elaborate on the key ideas from this session. This is a great opportunity to consolidate your learning before moving onto the next session.

Preparation for Session 2:

Read Chapter 2: The Base-Ten Structure of Numbers from your casebook. Consider the questions posed in the introduction of the chapter.
